New Zealand Vintage, Veteran and Classic Aircraft

Coordinated by Peter Layne

Not long ago we were lamenting the loss to Australia of our only airworthy Spitfire. Since then however, we have seen one complete its rebuild, be air-tested and depart overseas. Now we have a two-seat Mk IX Spitfire from the USA and in Feilding there is another approaching completion and which is due to fly in a few months. An exciting return to the register is Bob McGarry’s Spartan ZK-ABK. This has been under restoration for some time and at time of writing is in a very advanced state. As much as we like to preserve what we have, the above comings and goings do illustrate that there is always something else “just around the corner” whether it be an import or a local restoration.

I repeat each year that the accuracy of this section is largely dependent on you the reader making observations and letting me know about them. If you see something needing correcting or updating, please let me know — I welcome the feedback to 110 Taylor Terrace, Tawa, Wellington, or by e-mail (please do not ring me as I have a hearing disability and I want to record details accurately). The Directory also serves as free advertising for aircraft collections and I am keen to tidy up on what aerodrome the aircraft can be located.

Again, fly safely and have a good year in our aviation fraternity, whatever your particular interest may be.
Peter Layne
